Almost extinct!
Alder Leaf Beetle found at Three Hagges Woodmeadow
Alder Leaf Beetle at Three Hagges Woodmeadow

Whilst volunteer Jackie Ashcroft was removing old tree guards recently, she uncovered some beautiful iridescent beetles.

The beetles were subsequently identified as Alder Leaf Beetle (Agelastica alni).  They pass the winter as adults in leaf litter near their host trees.

The Alder Leaf Beetle was thought to be extinct in Britain until a few years ago.  More recently it has been gaining lost ground.  It is wonderful that the alder trees planted in Three Hagges Woodmeadow have played their part in saving such a pretty little beetle.
